La Traviata to be performed in Gibraltar on 18th and 19th April - a unique event in Gibraltar's cultural history.
Tickets are already on sale for the performances of Verdi's masterpiece on the evenings of 18th and 19th April, at the John Mackintosh Hall. The event is organised by the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society.
La Traviata combines all the ingredients of operatic tragedy and plays them out against the sweep of one of Verdi's best-loved scores. Premiered in 1853, 'La Traviata' is loved for several reasons - the beauty of the melodies, the complexity of the score and the passionate unfolding of the drama.
The opera tells the story of Violetta, a high-class 'courtesan' who sacrifices her love for Alfredo to protect the honour of his family. Later, reunited, they dream of their future together, but she dies in his arms.
Luz del Alba, from the Washington Opera, will sing the part of Violetta.
Luz del Alba Rubio began her studies at the University Conservatory in Montevideo, Uruguay with soprano Amelia Veiga. She then furthered her studies in Europe and graduated from the Geneva Conservatory in 1994. Following her graduation she studied privately with mezzosoprano Carmen
Gonzalez in Italy and Luciana Serra. Her debut on the opera stage came in Germany at the Summer festivals in Frankfurt and Mainz as Queen of the Night in "The Magic Flute."
Her first appearances in the United States were with the Washington Opera; most recently as Antonia and Giulietta in "Tales of Hoffmann" conducted by Emmanuel Villaume and directed by Marta Domingo and in "Parsifal" together with Placido Domingo conducted by Heinz Fricke, staged by Robert Oswald.
Ms. Rubio's operatic repertoire consists of the following roles: Musetta in "La Boheme" at Regio di Parma in the Francesca Zambello production, conducted by Daniel Lipton; Gilda in "Rigoletto", which she performed in over 18 productions in Italy and Switzerland; Lucia in Lucia de Lammermoor and Adina in "Elixir d'Amore" in Rome, Florence and Perugia conducted by Holtz, Fabbrini and Adamo respectively.
As Violetta in "La Traviata" she has elicited praise all over Belgium and Italy under the stewardship of P. Baton, M. Balderi, and D. Agimann.
Future engagements include: Frasquita in "Carmen" in the Washington Opera conducted by Placido Domingo, Violetta in "La Traviata" in Montevideo, "Lakme" in her debut at the Baltimore Opera House conducted by M. Veronesi, Gilda in "Rigoletto" and Lucia in "Lucia de Lammermoor" in her debut at the New York City Opera House, and Olympia in "The Tales of Hoffmann" at the Palm Beach Opera House.
Tickets, which will be numbered, are priced at £20. These are on sale only at Solomon Levy Estate Agents.
