The Berlin Philharmonic Soloists’ Series Alexander Schmalcz to accompany Albrecht Mayer

The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society and Turicum Private Bank are pleased to commence the “Berlin Philharmonic Soloists’ Series” by bringing to Gibraltar the man considered to be the world’s best oboist, Mr Albrecht Mayer on Thursday 31 January at 8:30pm in a recital together with piano accompanist Mr Alexander Schmalcz to be held at The Convent Ballroom.

The programme will feature Nielsen’s “Two Fantasy Pieces Op.2”, Paul Pierne’s “Fantasie Pastorale”, Camille Saint-Saens’ Sonate Op.166 together with some Robert Schumann and Carlo Yvon.

Alexander Schmalcz received his first piano lessons as a chorister in the Dresden Kreuzchor, to which he belonged between 1979 and 1988. He studied with Alexander Warenberg at the Utrecht Conservatoire, and with Iain Burnside and Graham Johnson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

He has won numerous prizes, including the Gerald Moore Award in 1996 and the Megan Foster Accompanist Prize.

Alexander Schmalcz can be heard regularly in the most important cultural centres of Europe, the Americas and Japan and in international festivals and concert halls such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Kennedy Center Washington D.C. As accompanist, he regularly works with international singers such as Matthias Goerne, Peter Schreier, Grace Bumbry, Stephan Genz, Eva Mei, and Doris Soffel. His chamber music partners include the Petersen Quartett.

He has been teaching at the Robert Schumann Conservatoire in Düsseldorf since 1999 and more recently, he partnered Matthias Goerne in a joint master class at the Wigmore Hall in London. He was also invited to take part as a jury member in the Munich based competition of “Das Deutsche Romantische Lied”.

Highlights in recent and upcoming seasons include recitals in the Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Cologne Philharmonie, at the Prague Spring Festival, Schwetzinger Festspiele, Salzburg Festival, Schleswig Holstein Music Festival as well as tours in the US and Japan.

The Society would like to announce to patrons that “The Silver Shop”, located at 275 Main Street, will be selling tickets for all concerts until further notice and would like to publicly thank them for agreeing to carry out this service.

Tickets priced at 20 pounds each are now available from The House of Sacarello in Irish Town and The Silver Shop with Credit/debit card purchases also available by phoning the Society on 72134. A limited number of tickets are also available to Senior Citizens at a reduced price via The John Mackintosh Hall at 308 Main Street.
