National Week Concert at St Michael’s Cave
The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society presents it’s traditional and annual National Week Concert arranged on behalf of the Government of Gibraltar at St Michael's Cave commencing at 9:00pm on Sunday the 31st August 2008.
The concert will feature pianist Llyr Williams performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 whilst accompanied by the South London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of local conductor Karel Mark Chichon. The latter will then perform Beethoven’s Symphony No 5.
A society spokesman said; “We are very pleased to be able to arrange this concert on behalf of Government and this year we have the opportunity to hear and pay homage to one of the most popular and influential composers of all time in Ludwig van Beethoven.”
Local conductor Karel mark Chichon has been Chief Conductor of the Graz Symphony Orchestra since 2006, Conductor Emeritus of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra since 2007 and Artistic Director of the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society since 1998.
Mr Chichon’s 2008-09 season will see his debut at the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Arena di Verona (with 16 performances of Carmen & Verdi: Requiem), Philharmonia Orchestra, SWR Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Orchestra of Teatro Carlo Felice, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra, Basel Chamber Orchestra in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Munich, Dresden, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Moscow, Barcelona and Valencia.
He also returns to the Vienna Symphony, Vienna Radio Symphony, Haydn Orchestra Bolzano, Latvian National Symphony, Brno Philharmonic and Seoul Philharmonic.
Born in London in 1971, Chichon hails from Gibraltar. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music (London) and was assistant conductor to Giuseppe Sinopoli and Valery Gergiev. He has worked with artists such as José Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Grace Bumbry, Edita Gruberova, José Cura, Juan Diego Flórez, Ramón Vargas and Carlos Álvarez.
Since 2003 he has been a regular guest conductor with the English Chamber Orchestra, with whom he tours frequently.
Tickets for the “Beethoven Festival” are priced at 14 pounds each and are available from The House of Sacarello in Irish Town and The Silver Shop at 275 Main Street. Credit/debit card purchase is also available by phoning the Society on 20072134. A limited number of tickets are also available to Senior Citizens at a reduced price via The John Mackintosh Hall at 308 Main Street.
The price includes a return shuttle service departing from Ince’s Hall from 8.00 pm.
