The “World of Verdi” Concert organised by the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society is a sell-out. All tickets were sold within hours of going on sale late last week.
The concert, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Gibraltar, will feature the Isai State Philharmonic Orchestra, soprano Angela Taverner and the Gibraltar Festival Chorus, which will be augmented by 25 choristers from the UK, conducted by Maestro Karel Mark Chichon. It will be held in St Michael’s Cave on Monday 6th September as part of the celebrations in the run-up to National Day..
The Isai State Philharmonic Orchestra of Romania traces its origins to the end of the 19th Century with a rich repertoire of works by Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner, among others. Today, the homogeneity, versatility and enthusiasm of the musicians of the Philharmonic of Isai are qualities that are highly respected and have enhanced the orchestra’s prestige around the world. Its most famous conductor was George Enescu.
Soprano, Angela Taverner was born in New Zealand and has been described as the most original talent seen on the Auckland stage since fellow-New Zealander, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Miss Taverner made her professional debut in 1994 with Opera New Zealand in her most demanding operatic role to date – Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto. A role she also performed at Opera Australia in Sydney last year. After a career in musical theatre, Miss Taverner decided to refocus her talents in opera when she was chosen to perform the role of Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni for the Mercury Theatre in 1989.
Miss Taverner will make her debut in Gibraltar singing well-known arias, among them, “Caro Nome” from “Rigoletto”, “Sempre libera” from “La Traviata” and “Sul fil d’un soffio etesio” from “Falstaff”.
The programme for the “World of Verdi” Concert will also include the overture to “La Forza del Destino”, the Preludes to Acts 1 & 3 of “La Traviata”, the Grand March from “Aida”, “Va pensiero” from “Nabucco” and the overture to “I Vespri Siciliani”.
