KAREL APPOINTED ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE LATVIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Local Conductor Karel Mark Chichon has been appointed Artistic Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.
The Ministry of Culture of Latvia recently announced Karel’s postion, which he will serve alongside his current position of Chief Conductor of the orchestra. Both positions begin in September 2009 and run until June 2012.
In so doing, Karel becomes the maximum authoritative figure in Latvian musical life, where he will be responsible to oversee the selection of all soloists and conductors of the Latvian National Symphony, as well as all other artistic matters affecting the orchestra. He heads a team of fifteen professionals which form part of the Artistic Office of the orchestra. The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra is the most important music entity in Latvia, with more than one hundred full-time musicians employed by the State. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts a year.
The financial conditions of Karel’s position have not been disclosed by the Latvian Ministry of Culture.
