Barbara Doll & Cristina Marton

The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society and The Bland Group continue their ongoing tradition of bringing to Gibraltar the ever popular violinist Barbara Doll who for the fourth year in succession will play at the Convent Ballroom on 15th April 2008 commencing at 8:30pm. On this occasion, Ms Doll will be accompanied by pianist Cristina Marton.

The recital will feature works by Schubert, Janacek and Brahms.

Ms Doll is a young artist who is appearing on the international music scene both as a soloist and chamber music player. She has performed concerts at venues as important as the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican in London, the Philharmonie in Berlin, Gasteig in Munich, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and Brucknerhaus in Linz, and has been invited numerous times to the Schleswig Holstein Festival and the Ravinia Festival, USA. As a soloist she has appeared e.g. with the English Chamber Orchestra (Concertos by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and others) and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Together with Nigel Kennedy she has performed the J.S. Bach Double Concerto. Her Wigmore Hall recital was favourably reviewed by The Strad magazine.

Barbara Doll was born in Freising near Munich. Her teachers were Ana Chumachenko in Munich, Thomas Zehetmair and Thomas Brandis in Berlin and David Takeno in London. She also took part in many master classes with Sandor Vegh, Gerhard Schulz, Ivry Gitlis, Gyorgy Kurtag and Josef Gingold. She was scholarship and promotion-prize holder of Villa Musica Mainz and has partnered such artists as Thomas Brandis, Miriam Fried ,Homero Francesch, Adrian Oetiker, Filippo Gamba, Silke Avenhaus, Claude Starck, Christoph Schiller, Dimitri Ashkenazy and Dieter Flury . Steven Isserlis has invited her several times to his chamber music festival in Prussia Cove, England. For some years now she has formed a duo with the pianist and Martha-Argerich-Prizewinner Cristina Marton, their CD with works by Enescu, Schubert, Schoenberg and Henze has recently been released.

Barbara Doll is a laureate of the International Schubert Competition Graz, especially of the Schubert Prize in the Franz Schubert-Year 1997, and of the Kuhmo International Duo Competition, Finland. Apart from numerous Radio and TV recordings both at home and abroad she has made CD recordings of chamber works by Schreker, Schoenberg and Mendelssohn.

Barbara Doll has led prestigious chamber orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Ensemble Resonanz and the German Kammerakademie Neuss , most of them she also directed without conductor. For many years she played in the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under such conductors as Claudio Abbado and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Barbara Doll is regularly giving masterclasses and since 2004 she is Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at the Hochschule der Kuenste Bern/ Switzerland and is living in Zurich.
