Tickets for the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society’s Jubilee Celebration Concert, to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, are now on sale. The concert will be held in St Michael’s cave on Thursday 27th of this month.

This celebratory concert, which is sponsored by Barclays, will be in the style of the very popular “Last Night of the Proms” held annually in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Each year in London this major music festival takes place known as the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, or “The Proms”. The season traditionally ends with a concert which includes some patriotic songs. The promenaders, who know that they will be invited by the conductor to join in and sing, which they do with great gusto, greet these with noisy excitement.

The “Last Night of the Proms” features Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March No 1, and Rule Britannia, works which will be performed in the Jubilee Celebration Concert, as well as Jupiter from the Holst’s The Planets, the Dambusters March and Walton’s Crown Imperial.

Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March No 1 includes, in its central section “Land of Hope and Glory” which is traditionally sung. The song’s origins lie in the finale of the Coronation Ode that Elgar wrote for the accession of Edward VII, indeed it was at the king’s suggestion that the words were fitted to the melody. Gustav Holst (an Englishman of Swedish extraction) began work on his orchestral suite The Planets before the outbreak of the First World War. The fourth movement, Jupiter, contains at its heart the sweeping melody which was later used for the hymn “I vow to thee my country”. The title theme of the great British film The Dambusters, a march written by Eric Coates, is considered to be one of the jewels in the crown of British film music.

The first half of the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society’s Jubilee Celebration Concert will include the Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, the Overture to the Thieving Magpie by Rossini and Ravel’s La Valse.

The Concert will feature the South London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Karel Mark Chichon. Also participating will be the combined choirs of Gibraltar with soloist Claire Hawkins.

Tickets for the Jubilee Celebration Concert, priced at £15, are on sale at Solomon Levy Estate Agents in Convent Place and at Sacarello’s in Irish Town. The price of the tickets includes a return bus shuttle service between Alameda Grand Parade and St Michael’s Cave.
